First-generation CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) refrigerants, commonly referred to as Freon, are classified as ozone-depleting substances with both high ozone depletion potential (ODP) and high global warming potential (GWP). Owing to their exceptional chemical stability and excellent cooling performance, they were widely used from the 1960s through the 1980s in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, automotive air conditioning, foam-blowing applications, and thermal insulation materials, playing a key role in the development of modern industry. However, it was later found that CFCs remain in the atmosphere for decades without decomposing, continuously depleting the ozone layer. As a result, their production and use have been completely phased out under the Montreal Protocol.
